What is TMD?
Everyone has a TMJ. It is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When that joint or the muscles around it cause pain or stop moving the way they should, that is TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder.
TMD often goes hand in hand with clenching and grinding. Stress, poor sleep and bite problems can all play a part.
Jaw pain or tightness, often worse in the morning
Dull headaches around the temples
Clicking, popping or locking when you open your mouth
Sore jaw muscles after chewing
Worn, chipped or flattened teeth

Your treatment options
Every case is different, so treatment starts with an exam. Depending on what we find, Dr. Panesar may recommend one or more of these. Some cases are complex. If yours needs a specialist's opinion, Dr. Panesar will refer you to a specialist we trust.

Frequently asked questions
Is TMD the same as TMJ?
No. Everyone has a TMJ, the jaw joint. TMD is when that joint or the muscles around it cause problems.
How do I know if I have TMD?
Morning jaw pain, headaches at the temples, clicking or worn teeth are common signs. Book an exam and Dr. Panesar will assess your jaw and bite.
Is a night guard enough?
For many people who grind at night, a custom night guard is the first step. If your jaw muscles stay sore, Dr. Panesar may discuss injections or other options with you.
What if my case is complex?
Some TMD cases need a specialist's opinion. If yours does, Dr. Panesar will refer you to a trusted specialist and stay involved in your care.
